At World of PEMF, we know that (as with many forms of alternative medicine) there are so many questions people have about PEMF therapy. Obviously, the common questions such as “what is PEMF treatment?” or “how does it work?” are at the top of the list. But there are so many other interesting aspects of PEMF you can learn about to help you understand how this amazing therapy works!
What does PEMF stand for? PEMF is an acronym for pulsed electromagnetic fields, and it describes a form of therapy in which a device releases pulses of electromagnetic energy in an effort to improve overall health and wellness.
This may sound scary; even dangerous! But we, along with millions of others who have tried PEMF, can assure you that it can offer so many various benefits to so many people.
In this blog, we’ll address how to use PEMF therapy, what it can treat, and certain myths about PEMF!
Is PEMF a Hoax?
This is an easy question to answer; absolutely not! Even though it is a relatively new form of therapy, there have already been countless studies demonstrating its effectiveness for treating a variety of ailments. Even if you don’t have a specific condition you’re looking to treat, PEMF can offer so many amazing benefits. From overall well-being, to chronic pain–PEMF can help!
But how does it do this? PEMF devices emit an electromagnetic field through the body to stimulate and heal the trillions of cells within you. Our bodies are actually electromagnetic in nature, which is why certain frequencies of magnetic waves can be beneficial for our health. It is generally considered that earth-based frequencies of PEMF (1-100 Hz) are best for us, but we believe that lower earth-based frequencies (1-30 Hz) are best as they are most prevalent in nature.
When PEMF passes through the body, it is able to rebalance the natural magnetic charge of our cells. Healthy cells have a Transmembrane Potential (TMP) of approximately -70 to -90 millivolts. Cells that have a charge within this range can function at their best level. Over time though (along with exposure to harmful EMFs), our cells’ TMP can drop below -50 millivolts. Once cells fall below this level, you can experience symptoms of fatigue, inflammation, and other negative healthy effects.
Research has found that PEMF can help recharge cells back to their natural health. This means that those nasty health effects you might experience can be dispelled! Although there is still a considerable amount of future research needed to fully understand PEMF therapy, this is the basis of how it affects our body.
Measuring PEMF
In our previous blog post about PEMF, we discussed how these magnetic fields are measured, so we’ll just briefly go over what the units of measurement are and how they affect magnetic energy. Many different PEMF devices release different magnetic fields, so it’s important to know which settings are best for you.
Magnetic Frequency
You probably know that sound waves have certain frequencies that produce a different pitch. Like soundwaves, magnetic waves have frequencies too and they can each affect the body differently. Frequency is typically measured in hertz (or Hz) and they can range from less than 1 Hz to thousands of Hz. We believe that frequencies of 1 Hz to 30 Hz are best as these are natural and not harmful.
Magnetic Intensity
PEMF intensity refers to the strength of the magnetic wave emitted. It is similar to the amplitude (or volume) of a sound wave. The stronger the intensity of a magnetic wave has to do with how much the wave affects cells. Intensity is typically measured in gauss (G) or milligauss (mG). For example, 1 gauss is equivalent to 1000 mg.
Many people initially think that higher intensities are better than lower intensities, but that isn’t true at all! This is because natural magnetic fields on Earth have relatively low intensities. In fact, higher intensities have been shown to have potential dangers, so we recommend devices that use magnetic waves between .1 G (100 mG) to 3 gauss (3000 mG).
Waveform
The waveform of a magnetic wave is, in layman’s terms, the shape of the wave. With sound waves, different waveforms generate different sounds, and with magnetic waves different waveforms can also have different effects on our cells. Some common PEMF waveforms include sine, square, sawtooth, triangle, and more. Sine magnetic waves are found naturally so they are considered the most beneficial, but others may offer benefits too. That’s why we recommend looking for a PEMF device that emits sine waves or, even better, one that allows you to choose between different waveforms!
Myths about PEMF and the Conditions It Can Treat
Congratulations, you now have a solid understanding of PEMF and how it works! Still, PEMF is a complex and intricate therapy and there is more to learn. But don’t worry, keep reading and we’ll address some common misconceptions and myths about PEMF and what it can treat.
Can PEMF Help with Weight Loss?
In the health world and beyond, weight loss is a hot topic amongst men and women alike. It seems like, nowadays, everyone is looking to lose weight and looking for new ways to do so. So, can PEMF help you lose weight?
Fortunately, it can! This is a result of PEMF’s effect on blood flow which, in turn, affects the body’s metabolism. When your blood flow is enhanced, your cells are able to gain more energy, leading to an increased ability for your cells to burn off calories. Less calories means less fat tissue. One study that looked at PEMF and its relation to circulation found that 7 Hz was an especially effective frequency for elevating blood flow. Another study, that used PEMF with a frequency of 7.5 Hz, noted that this therapy “may provide a potential approach for the treatment of obesity”.
Can PEMF Help Treat Anxiety or Depression?
There are many people who are unaware that PEMF therapy can not only relieve symptoms of physical ailments, but mental and psychological ones too! In fact PEMF offers a great solution for those who are resistant to medicine and pharmaceuticals.
Regarding anxiety, a study that used PEMF sessions consisting of 10, 14, and 18 Hz, as well as an intensity of 2 gauss, found that PEMF can be applied for the treatment of anxiety. The study did note that there is further investigation needed into PEMF as a modality for anxiety, but this therapy has already shown promising results.
Knowing how to use PEMF for depression can be a little trickier. This is because most of the research that has looked at the correlation between electromagnetic therapy and depression have used something similar to PEMF called TMS, or transcranial magnetic stimulation. This form of magnetic therapy is close to PEMF but is instead applied directly against the skull while PEMF is most often applied to body parts below the neck. Regardless, a research study found that 20 sessions of electromagnetic therapy emitted at 20 Hz showed significant decreases in depression levels in participants.
Can PEMF Help with Diabetes
While PEMF cannot cure diabetes (or any disease for that matter), it can certainly help reduce the symptoms of it. Diabetes is a disease in which blood sugar in the body is too high. Some of the symptoms associated with diabetes can be frequent urination, excessive thirst, and fatigue, but PEMF has shown benefits with diabetic peripheral neuropathy. A 2013 study used PEMF with a 15 Hz magnetic wave on rats with diabetic peripheral neuropathy. At the end of the trial, the study determined that PEMF could be a promising non-invasive tool for treating this symptom of diabetes.
Can PEMF Treat Cancer?
As we stated before, PEMF doesn’t have the ability to cure any disease and it should not be the sole treatment method for any specific condition. This is especially true for cancer. But PEMF does have the ability to alleviate the pains associated with both cancer and chemotherapy, improving the quality of life for those going through cancer.
So, how does PEMF help with cancer? Because PEMF helps cells function at their most optimal level, they are better able to reduce the common symptoms that cancer patients experience. It also helps cells fight back against cancerous cells. A scientific review highlighted one study that used PEMF emitting 20 Hz for breast and colon cancer. They found encouraging results but noted that they needed more further research to have a better understanding of PEMF and its effect on cancer. Regardless, PEMF has already demonstrated its ability to help heal the body and improve the life of those going through this horrible disease.
